Sherry Gail Veling, (Sher) 69 of La Quinta, California, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 14th, 2016, due to complications of breast cancer. She was surrounded by her husband Doug and close personal friends.
Sher was born in Riverside, California on December 9th, 1946 to Fred and Kay Garlick and went to Ramona High School where she graduated in 1964. She attended San Jose State University where she completed her business education in bookkeeping and accounting before moving to Del Mar, California and working at Lomas Santa Fe C.C. in Solana Beach.
Sherry was an active sportswoman and participated in organized volleyball tournaments up and down the California Coast, most notably with Wilt Chamberlin in Newport Beach, California. After injuring her knees, she took up golf, was an avid player for the rest of her life with a low handicap of 4. She has been a member of PGA West for 28 years.
On August 3, 1974, Sher married Doug Veling in an Oceanfront setting at the Ocean House, (now the Hilton) on Mission Bay, San Diego. Subsequently they moved to the Coachella Valley where Sher worked in accounting at the Indian Wells C.C. and the La Quinta Hotel before joining Doug at The Northwestern Mutual Life as Office Manager until her retirement.
As the years ensued, they enjoyed traveling and saw most of the world picking up friends along the way, most notably in St. Thomas, USVI, South Africa and Hawaii.
Sherry is survived by her husband Doug, 68 of La Quinta, Ca and her son Dakari Dewees, 49, of Costa Mesa, California
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at La Quinta Christian Fellowship, starting at 11:00 am.
